Smacchat College Football Top 25

1. Florida - Can't dispute this pick, defending national champs with Tebow returning and a plethora of talent and speed surrounding him. King of the hill until someone knocks them off. The big question is can they survive the SEC unblemished?
2. Texas - C'mon Horns! LA Monroe, Wyoming, and UTEP as your non-conference schedule? If that comes back to bite you come December, you deserve it.
3. USC - It's all about the Q for SC. The kid is going to need to not miss a beat when he comes in. 9/12 at the Horseshoe is his litmus test and that's a lot to ask.
4. Oklahoma - Sets up for a nice showdown with Tebow/Bradford again this year, and if he can get them back to the B-12 title game SB will deserve all the props he gets.
5. Alabama - Watch out for these guys down at number 5. IF any of the freshman can come in and immediately contribute from that monster recruiting class they'll be round' come Jan/Feb
6. Va. Tech - The flag carrier of the ACC, at least the Pac-10 has other reps in the top 10, and that schedule is SOFT!. Tech can easily find themselves among the last of the unbeatens.
7. Ole Miss - This is the team that has quietly gone under the radar and may sneak up and not only challenge the incumbent but actually win the SEC East.
8. Ohio State - Ok, we're only going to get so excited about OSU until they can show us they've addressed the team speed issue, that they've matured at QB, and that they can actually win a BCS game.
9. Cal - We like em'. Lotta talent, they get SC at home which will decide the division and have good experience coming back.
10. Oklahoma State - Another school that was able to parlay a great season into an excellent recruiting class. They may no see the dividends this year but if they get some immediate contribution, don't pencil the Sooners in just yet.
11. Penn State
12. LSU
13. Oregon
14. Georgia
15. Boise St.
16. TCU
17. Georgia Tech
18. North Carolina
19. Nebraska
20. Rutgers
21. Notre Dame
22. Utah
23. Iowa
24. Kansas
25. UCLA

The real REAL facts are (everyone already knows this and ALWAYS doesn't want to hear it), that on any given Saturday, something crazy can (and will) happen. 2008 examples include (PSU v Iowa, Ole Miss v UF, USC v some awful PAC-10 team, etc.). So if we all agree on that (and if you disagree with my point your just being silly/stupid), we can enjoy our silly/stupid talk even more in this forum! Having said that, UF is just going to be crazy good and deserving of their #1 rank. Being #1 ain't east when you HAVE to go wire to wire undefeated, but if there is any time you are going to to see it happen, it's this year. Awesome NC games include UF v Texas, UF v USC and UF v Okla (although a rematch would be far less exciting than the USC or Texas NC game). I choose not to accept any other match ups in the NC but anything COULD happen. As my friend pointed out and someone else in this forum had said, OSU is in the mix as they can take down USC at home and win the rest of their weaksauce schedule. Also, I'd like to point out that UF has some of the best leaders on the field (coaches and players). Spikes and Tebow are just the start of a top leader squad. So put your dollar on UF in a the NC v Texas or OSU (sigh). USC can lose 2 or 3 this year more easily than UF can. No one but Big-10 fans wants to see OSU or PSU fail at another NC shot/game. It will be prob SEC and Big-12 South. Now that wasn't all that silly was it?

You know it really seems a bit unfair when you have a national championship game being played at home. This gives teams like UF, LSU, and USC an unfair advantage! I mean seriously SEC teams like to rip on Ohio State because of back to back NC losses but they had to play LSU in New Orleans! Then you have USC, where the Rose Bowl is played in their damn stadium! Seriously, these games need to be played on neutral ground if you want fair match ups. I would love to see a little more inter-conference games between the SEC and Big-10, have the SEC show us how well they do when they have to go play a November game in the Big House or the Horseshoe! When you have to play some cold weather games where speed is no longer the primary factor and strength and endurance come more into play, then we will see the true metal of these SEC teams!

1) Notre Dame has more returning starters on offense this year than any other Div I-A school, and their defense is returning a lot of personnel as well. If we ranked the teams that are losing the least amount of stars and players to graduation, Notre Dame would be Top 5 overall.

2) ND's strength of schedule is very manageable. It's not as easy as one would think (eight of the opponents went to bowl games this past year, and six opponents won at least eight games), but the only guaranteed loss on the schedule is the date with USC. Notre Dame has the tools and the talent to be in position to win every other game on that schedule. The question then becomes "do they have the coaching?"

3) Notre Dame has seven home games, not including the neutral site game against God-awful Washington State...

Taken altogether, 9-3 is a very likely record for the Irish, and 10-2 is not outside the realm of possibility either. Phil Steele knows all this and believe me it was a very logical pick.

I HONESTLY WANT ANOTHER SHOT AT TEXAS, I HOPE THE CHAMPIONSHIP IS BETWEEN TEXAS AND USC! I MEAN THE LAST TIME THESE TEAMS MET IT HAPPENED TO BE THE BEST CHAMPIOSHIP GAME OF ALL TIME ARGUABLY. BUT JUST TO SHUT UP THE SEC I WOULD RATHER WATCH USC AND FLORIDA, IF YOU LOVE COLLEGE FOOTBALL AS MUCH AS I DO YOU WANT THIS MATCHUP. WE HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT WHO IS FATSER, HITS HARDER OR SCORES MORE BETWEEN USC AND SEC SCHOOLS THIS COULD BE THE YEAR WE SEE THIS AND SILENCE ALL SEC HATERS

i couldn't agree more florida is defiantly the best team this year. But they also know that and so does every other team so every game is going to be the opposing teams best shot. I dont think they go to the national championship

The NC is Florida's to lose. The Big Head mentality may be their downfall this year. I see them losing to Georgia and LSU. So be careful Florida it IS all yours to lose. The tide will be waiting for you in the SEC Champ game. That is if Georgia don't beat you and make it.
Roll Tide.
Best of luck UF

All I know is that if Boise St. joined the MWC, the champ would be in the BCS, and an undefeated champ would be in the NC game. The league would be the third best in the country. I don't think that would be disputed too easily. No, BSU wouldn't dominate the MWC although their record against current MWC teams does suggest they would. The Broncos have gotten some very favorable scheduling of MWC teams over the years. And last year, I don't think you can argue BSU could have finished any higher than third or fourth after the way TCU shredded them in the Poinsettia Bowl.

"I think you guys are missing the overall goal here. If Boise were to be accepted/invited into the MWC it's not that they'd have an easier or tougher schedule it's the fact that this puts two teams that contend for a BCS bowl spot on a fairly routine basis into one conference. This almost assures them the automatic bid the Mountain West is so actively and publicly seeking, and gives Boise and Utah the chance to compete for the national title they feel they've been deserving of for some time now"

I would love to see Florida travel to play teams from the Pac, Big XII and MWC, etc. However, I'm not responsible for Florida's revenue stream. Their AD has to take more into account than just competition. I understand his stance as well. But as a fan, I have been disappointed in Florida's OOC schedule recently (and their upcoming ones). They could schedule teams like Texas Tech, Arizona St., and BYU, beat them on the road and silence the critics until they find another reason to knock the Gators.

I have continual hope that this would happen, but it won't. BSU is keeping the WAC relevant. If they were to join the Mountain West they would easily be one of the top 3 teams in the conference (fighting right along side TCU, BYU and UTAH) and help provide motion for the Mtn. West bid to get... something... anything. A BCS automatic bid, a playoff, anything that gets the Mountain West more respect and (more importantly) more money then they get now.

Um...FSU and Miami last year would have finished 5th or 6th in the MWC last year and been borderline bowl teams depending on their OOC schedule.

Everybody trashes Wyoming and San Diego St. and UNLV and New Mexico for bringing the top 3 in the MWC down. Yet those same teams that finish at the bottom of the MWC are better than the teams that finish at the bottom of the BCS conferences. New Mexico beat Arizona last year (a bowl team from the Pac-10) despite going 2-6 in MWC play. UNLV beat Arizona St. out of the Pac-10 on the road and then went 2-6 in MWC play. Wyoming beat Tennesee on the road who went 3-5 in the mighty SEC, yet the Cowboys were only good enough to go 1-7 in the MWC. Even SDSU was a goalline fumble away from beating Notre Dame on the road last year. So if you are going to chalk up a game against those teams as a patsy game, then you have to regard half of the Pac 10 and SEC as patsy games. Kentucky, Mississippi St., South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt aren't better teams than WYO, UNM, UNLV, and SDSU. They just have bigger names.

To your points on things that would hurt recruiting, I would respond:

1. BSU is, frankly, a better place to live than most of Utah. It is consistently rated as one of the best places to live in the nation.
2. Yes, having undefeated seasons and top-15 finishes helps recruiting, but constantly having jack *** trolls like the ones you can see infesting this thread saying BSU never plays anyone tough and plays a wimpy WAC schedule undoubtedly HURTS recruiting. I think these two balance out.
3. I'm not convinced that the top-15 finishes would end. Based on BSU's past record against MWC competition, we compete just fine. I think we compete year in and year out for a conference championship if we join and I think the MWC becomes an AQ school if we join.

Now here's something from a BSU perspective. TWICE in the last five-six years BSU has finished undefeated and been bypassed for a BCS bowl invite because Utah finished just a little higher. Do you honestly think, just as an example, that BSU wouldn't have crushed Pitt back in 2004? (We did beat an 11-1 TCU in our bowl the previous year for instance...AT TCU.)

It probably does go on to the VERY top of the line recruits...but not to most...they come to USC because they know that if they're good enough to get on the field they will play regardless of who was in front of them...and most of these kids think that they are good enough to play and a lot of them are willing to wait a couple of years because practicing at USC is an experience in and of itself...You don't need 3 great years to get noticed at USC...all u need is 1 and u can turn that into a 1st round draft pick

What happens when Boise St can't go undefeated every other year anymore? Let's face it, there's no other drive to the Boise St football program other than the recent success, so I'd be worried that getting a couple losses each year from facing tougher competition would cause Boise St to lose what makes it special. Without that success, recruiting dries up and the team enters a downward spiral.

I really think Boise St and the MWC serve each other better as independent parties.
