Seven weeks into the season the BCS poll is out, which in this day and age is the ONLY one that matters, and what is reads is that several teams despite dropping a game are still very much in the hunt to play for the National Championship. Texas is the clear favorite that sits atop the polls, and one of the rare times where all three polls are in agreement. Next is Bama’ and Penn St (our choice for the NC game) all unbeaten. However 5-11 is crazy where anyone can emerge and stake a claim to fill the second spot. It’s hard to imagine a Big-12 or SEC representative running the table but despite our best efforts to call the doom of the BCS, there is one clear out for them which is looking almost probable NOT possible. It involves Texas and Penn St. running the table, if that turns out to be the case, no one would dispute them in the NCG(if Bama loses along the way).
So, looking down the road, here are the huge games that could cause the unbeatens to fall and finally expose the BCS for the ‘farce’ that it is. Texas – at Texas Tech, Kansas and the Big-12 title game (we don’t think Ok State will present a problem). Bama really only has to LSU before the SEC Championship game, (we also don’t think Auburn will present a problem). Lastly, Penn St. simply has no one else to play period until the NC game. Of course if either of the Big 12 or SEC slip up then USC goes in and plays Jopa and the Lions in NC and half of the nation, east of the Mississippi River boycotts the BCS Championship Game. That may seem like several stars aligning, and playing connect the dots more than in an Oliver Stone contrived film but look more closely and see that the prophesized “train wreck” is closer than you think. Just the same, who is in your title game? Let us know here or in the NCAA chat rooms.

Train wreck coming down the tracks in January
As we have previously written, this is the year that the BCS will have to pay the piper. Another upset filled weekend in college football came to a close claiming two more top five teams as casualties. Starting at the top, the number one ranked Oklahoma Sooners fell in the Red River Shootout to Texas 45-35 after leading 21-10. The Longhorns were unproven, and unrespected, thus far this year but proved many of the critics wrong coming from behind and finally taking the lead in the fourth quarter. Oklahoma's rushing game was non-existent, totaling only 48 yards on 26 carries. So only after one week at #1 the Sooners vacate the top spot, but who moves into number one? Idle Bama’ (#2) or does Texas jump four places to number one? Also bitten was number three Mizzou who may have been caught looking forward to the showdown with Texas next weekend. Oklahoma St. completed the “daily double” by upsetting the Tigers 28-23 parlayed with the OU loss, it was a pretty good weekend in Stillwater. To add another Motrin to the BCS headache LSU got trounced by one loss Florida 51-21 giving the most of the SC at least one loss. The remaining (contending) unbeatens are Bama, Texas, Penn St, BYU, and Ok St. and it’s impossible for them to stay that way as the championship games will take care of that. The freight train collision is coming, wait and see, as the SEC champ will have at LEAST two losses and the Big-12 probably one. Oh yes, and don’t forget to look out West at SC, and what to make of BYU who in all probability will be unbeaten at the end of the year. There are going to be some tears shed come January, but in a year where even people on the West Coast can not refute the dominance of the SEC and Big 12, do they still deserve to go to the NC over an unbeaten or one-loss school? Talk about it here and in the NCAA chat rooms.

Could this finally be the season that the BCS pays the piper?
The way this season has started off the BCS is finally fit to be tied. Literally. As several top five teams have tasted early season defeat and we haven’t even made it to rivalry week let alone conference championship games. This week managed to come and go with only one top-10 casualty, South Florida, who got clipped by Pittsburgh 26-21. However the problem that lies ahead for the BCS is that BYU now sits at 8 in the USA Today poll ahead of both former number 1’s USC and Georgia. Also, take not to Bama’ at 2 and LSU at 4, unfortunately someone must lose the SEC title game and be at one loss, but does anyone dispute that the loser would be more deserving of a NC bid than BYU? From there it gets worse as the Big 12 will certainly throw its hat in ring as they now own four of the top seven spots in the country. Once again the loser of the title game may find themselves on the outside looking in. Which finally brings us to the pride of the Pac-10 USC. Losing to OState (again) was a huge mistake no doubt about it but a tough non-conference and the title of ‘people’s champion’ because of all of the pure NFL talent on the club, makes them a favorite for both fans AND advertisers that want to see a West Coast/East Coast shootout to settle the ‘bias wars’ once and for all. Oh yes, don’t forget about what would be the best story line of all, if JoPa were to run the table and put PSU in position to play for the NC at 100 years old. Even better than televising winless Notre Dame games on national TV every weekend. I don’t even want to bring up the possibility of Ohio State embarrassing themselves again as a possibility. In any case, this will be the year that mockery of a system that runs the second largest sporting audience in this country will be finally exposed for the farce that it is. However it will take one or more of the afore mentioned storied programs to be omitted from the mix causing a lot of pain and bitterness for the athletes, students, and alumni the advertisers love so much. A necessary evil and step back before we can take any steps forward. Who do you think will be snubbed at the end of the year?
