The year that saw 7 'second-ranked' teams lose, a 2-loss team lay claim to being the best team in the nation, and a cavalcade of bowl mis-matches, and raised more questions than ever, has finally come to an anti-climatic close with the Buckeyes getting blown out for the second consecutive year in the BCS Championship. If an introspective must be done, these are some of the points of consideration:
If the BCS is so bent on not changing the system, they will continue to see their ratings plummet as a host of bowl games couldn't hold viewers past the first half:
Cotton Bowl - Missouri 38 - Arkansas 7
Rose Bowl - USC 49 - Illinois 17
Fiesta Bowl - West Virginia 48 - Oklahoma 28
Sugar Bowl - Georgia 41 - Hawaii 10
BCS Title - LSU 38 - Ohio St. 24 (not as close as the 14pts would indicate)
Even with all of the controversy this bowl season had the potential to be the best but there are too many agendas that need to be met. The Rose COULD have, but DID NOT have, Georgia matched up with USC(the people's championship) for example. Instead we got a series of lack luster games with only participants actually staying around to see the outcome. At least this will take care of all of the WAC's of the world demanding recognition for being on par with the majors as last year's Boise St. victory was proven to be an aberration with the mighty Rainbow Warriors looking like a deer in headlights from the opening snap in a 41-10 blowout at the hands of the Bulldogs, and it wasn't even that close. Even the Herbstreets' of the world must admit it is time for reform now! Post your thoughts on this blog or in the NCAA chat rooms.
....but it wouldn't be fair not to mention the best bowls of the season NONE of which were BCS Bowls:
Capital One - Michigan 41 - Florida 35
Gator Bowl - Texas Tech 31 - Virginia 28
Chick-fil-a - Auburn 23 - Clemson 20(ot)
Outback - Tenn 21 - Wisconsin 17
Music City - Kentucky 35 - Florida St. 28
Las Vegas - BYU 17 - UCLA 16
