Is there another Appalachian State on the horizon?

When Appalachian State upset Michigan in the Big House last year, many were calling it the biggest upset in the history of college football. The Maze & Blue have never lived it down and it may be a few decades before they do. What might ease their pain or take some of the heat off, is if the feat happens to someone else. We looked at some potential games this year where that could be the case and here are the potential upset specials, but don’t hold us to it.

Charleston Southern at Miami
Firstly, this is the type of game that “Nicky the Fish” looks forward to as the Canes’ may be looking ahead to Florida on Sept 6th. Big spread but it’s athletes vs. athletes in this one.

Western Illinois at Arkansas
WI returns 18 starters and has the experience to play though the ether of ruckus crowd take the 24+ points in this one.

Western Michigan at Nebraska
My favorite, the Black Shirts are like the Jedi, all but extinct, Ralph Brown (1999) was the last of their religion. Now they are just another team an can be scored against.

Best chance for the “talk of the year” upset – Northern Iowa at BYU
Remember BYU is predicted to go to a BCS game this year so this would be a big upset, but NI beat Iowa State last year and has many seniors and returning starters. The Cougars might be thinking about the UCLA game when this rolls around.

Why does Smacchat and most of the posters to this blog HATE Ohio State so much? is it because we have been to two straight NCs?? If that's the case then improve your schools and don't hate the player improve YOUR game!

Tom, we dont hate Ohio State for playing in 2 NC games... We hate them because they think they are better than everyone else even though they play a weak #### schedule. They lost to the only good team they played Illinois. And they cant seem to win a Bowl Game which just continues to showcase "The Ohio State" losing to the good team after good team yet they get love just because they are considered a "National Power House" as they were in years past. HEY VOTERS!!! OSU ISNT AS GOOD AS THEY ONCE WERE THEY ARE JUST GOOD ENOUGH TO BEAT THE OK TEAMS AND LOSE BADLY TO THE GOOD TEAMS.

amen!

I don't really "hate" Ohio State. However, I get so irritated with seeing them at the top of the polls every year, only to get beaten any time they play a really challenging game. ESPN, stop buying into them and look at their strength of schedule (Texas is another one who squeeks by on the likes of playing Rice and TCU). USC is an example of a team that ESPN analysts constantly sing praise, but it seems that by the end of the season, USC always manages to find a way to prove they belong high in the rankings.

lsu might has well played last years championship in baton rouge....they had a huge homefield advantage over ohio state...and in 07 ohio state lost their most explosive player and momentum after he left the game on th eopening kickoff....ohio state was at a disadvantage both times...so you can not say that just b/c osu lost twice in nc that the sec is better...they just had more advantages....oh yea dn tennessee fans...07 outback bowl..who won?...PENN STATE!...the BIG TEN is this year

You're wrong, everybody hates Ohio State because every year they play the biggest creampuff schedule, have no conference finals, and when they get to the BCS title game, show they do not belong there!---1 title under Tressel and that was a gift from the ref's. Their basketball team is also a bunch of also-rans---they puffed out their chest when they won the NIT and cried "see what happens when you put the best team here"==haha--if they consider themselves the best because they won the freaking NIT, they need to lookin the mirror and see how the previous teams fared!----you bunch of overrtaed crybabies!

if the top SEC team LSU beat the crap out of lets say Arizona St.,there would be NO bragging, because who cares.its not even an important conference game that may get you put out of the SEC championship game.and, their not even a top wac1 team.Arkansas is normally about 6th or 7th in the SEC,and USC fans brag about that victory.they didn't even have McFadden that game.So the BEST pac10 team against an average at best SEC team.i guess USC should have won.just like they will beat Virginia.Where did they end up in a struggling ACC last year?

It's funny when a fan from a PAC10 team, or any other really, brags about beating an SEC team. Those Left Coast teams aren't playing the Tennessees, Floridas, or Georgias. SEC is BIG BOY football!!! Of course its speculation because it can't be proven...but NO WAY can USC, TEXAS, OHIO STATE, or any other so-called Major Program be at the level they enjoy if they were playing an SEC schedule. PERIOD!!!!

Mizzou sucks. They will get destroyed by the Illini in the first week and show how much better the Big 10 is than the Big 12.

Fact: Pre season polls are as stable as the current national gas prices. This year is going to be a battle of two conferences: The Pac 10 and the SEC. The Pac 10 this year has 9 out of ten teams that will be strong. Yes, 9 out of 10. Five of the Pac 10 teams will compete week in and week out for top poll positions. Cal will be the big surprise for most of you, especially those on the east cost. Cal does have the best linebacker squad in the nation. The young backers guys we haven't seen playyet, make it that much deeper of a threat. The more these guys blitz, the better it will be for Cal and for our viewing. Note: Cal also has not one, not two, but three quality QB's. Be careful teams, if Brock Manson plays. The wideouts are young...but there's 3 of them that are capable of being wicked good. (Speed, hands, size = touchdowns.) Don't worry, I judge all teams fairly... and this Cal team has the ability to win every game. Will they play as a team this year...or play as individuals...? Leadership is needed.. If that happens... Welcome Cal as the new Pac-10 champion.

I think it could go anyway this season. I wouldnt be surprised if a sleeper went undefeated and made it to the title game, somebody like a Texas Tech or something like that. I think the entire battle over which conference is better is completely overblown. Conferences go through phases, thats just how it is. Last couple years the SEC has been the top dog but they wont stay there forever, before that it was the Big 12 and Big Ten.

If the small schools want to run with the big boys, then they need to put up or shut up. If the Hawaii, Boise, Utah, & BYU's of the world want a shot at a national title, then they need to be playing the same level of competition week in and week out, just like everyone else.

ThaDeceptikon: Small conferences are there to make sure that a mid-major school with 3000 students doesn't have to get blown out year after year by a school with 25000 kids and a budget ten times the size. Also, conferences promote regional rivalries, which to some are more important than rankings if their school is out of contention.

Changing up the conferences is unnecessary. The power of scheduling is with the schools themselves as it is, so a soft schedule costing a team a shot at an at-large is the schools own fault.

The only thing that truly needs to happen is a playoff system. The college football season is already too long considering all of the athletes have scholastic responsibilities as well. The extra week between the end of the season and the bowls is generally finals week for many schools, and the spread out format of the bowls is to generate TV revenue for small schools. Condensing the bowls might be possible, but pushing the entire season to start one week early is also an option. Keep in mind the bye weeks team can schedule are also under their jurisdiction so if an early season opener is difficult, every school has the option to open with a bye.

tebow's record as a starter - 9 - 4
stafford's record as a starter - 17 - 4. Numbers don't lie.

Also, Stafford is 1 - 0 against tebow, when both of them were starting..

"it get's brought up at SEC media day because the media asked him the questions... he didn't write about it at length in his, it's not like he devoted a chapter to the celebration... he just said it sticks with him... looking back, i was in the endzone when it happened (like 30 ft. away from me)... it was chaotic and i was cussing UF for not doing anything, the players just stood there on the sidelines and the ones on the field walked away(one player for UF tried to pull UGA players away but to no avail it was 1 on 60)... thankfully they kept their heads and didn't have a kneejerk response like the 42,000 gator fans wanted... all the UF side took away from that game was how classless and uncontroled Richts is and now we cannot wait for NOV.1... "

Mr. Smacchat what would happen if Ohio State and Oklahoma went undefeated, and Georgia won the SEC with one loss. I asked this because as I keep hearing commentators say that there is "no way" that Georgia is left out of the championship game with only 1 loss. If that is true, which undefeated team from a major conference do you remove? Ohio State would have played two top 10 teams on the road and won, including at Southern Cal. Oklahoma would have beaten atleast two (maybe as many as 4) top 10 teams, with 2 in neutral sites.

As deserving as Georgia would be even with its difficult schedule, I couldn't see an undefeated Ohio State or Oklahoma left out for a 1 loss Georgia. Undoubtably, it would be BCS chaos.

The talent IS THERE at Florida St. Don't be suprised if they have a resurgence. That's my ACC darkhorse.
Tennessee is my SEC darkhorse (they are NOT going to lose to UGA AND FLA).
Big 12 - Colorado
Big East - Pitt
Big 10 - Michigan St.
Pac 10 - UCLA

Oregon? pffft! Oregon's speed left with the NFL draft. Dixon is all they had. Proof is in the results. 0 losses with Dixon, 0 wins without...

And how can you rate the possibility of future usage? Putting OU up there because they're putting in a spread offense? What about Michigan then? You know they're getting the spread. They should be #1 since they may think about possibly installing a spread...

Where is WVU? They have DOMINATED so call power n speed teams Oklahoma and Georgia the last 3 years...amazing! Guess some people dont watch the same games. WVU just keeps winning that is all that matters

Hey Smacchat, Who won the Fiesta Bowl last year? Who got beat in the Fiesta Bowl last year? Again, you discount WVU (NOT W Va!) and their speed, potential, and tradition. I hope you continue doing so - and we'll win another big BCS game! Go Mountaineers!
